The human brain works in weird ways. To put it simply, the brain is always working to keep us comfortable, keep us "safe" and keep us "content". Whether you're about to try something for the first time, do something you've been stressing about, or about to do something you wouldn't normally do, your brain starts coming up with crazy scenarios and possible outcomes that could make for an unpleasant experience. Your mind starts putting the worst thoughts at the forefront while you're suddenly being overtaken with anxiety and worry. This is normal. That doesn't mean you should let it hold you back from trying new things or doing the things that would allow you to grow into the person you desire to become. Suddenly you feel paralyzed from doing anything that could potentially cause a negative experience. The thoughts in your head are trying to hold you back by forcing you to hesitate, overthink, and "try again another time".
Stop thinking. Do it anyway.
Not as easy as it sounds, by any means, but it's actually how you should go about it.
Why do we hesitate in the first place? Is it the fear of rejection? The fear of things not turning out the way we hoped they would? What if we can't handle whatever happens once we take action on what we've been putting off or stalling?
Here's the thing. Your true potential relies on you being able to overcome your self-doubt. Now, this doesn't mean you can never doubt yourself again. No. This means it's time to stop letting your self-doubt hold you back from ever taking action in the first place.
- What's one thing you've been putting off lately?
- What's one thing you've been afraid to do because you either doubt yourself or you're afraid of the outcome?
- What's one thing you "WISH" you could just muster up the courage to just DO?
Next time you're getting ready to do the one thing you've been hesitating to do, stop for a second, take a deep breath and count down from 5 seconds. Once you reach 1, act. Do it. Don't think anymore. Don't start the countdown over. Do what you've been meaning to do.
Enter: The 5 Second Rule. The 5 Second Rule was created by Mel Robbins. Mel used this rule to take back control of her own life. It ended up working so tremendously that she ended up writing a book about it[The 5 Second Rule], how you can apply it to your own life, and how it's changed and transformed so many people's lives after they started implementing the rule into their own experiences. The book was not only a huge success, but it became an international bestseller. Mel now travels the world giving talks and providing training for people looking to take control of their confidence, anxiety, and lives as a whole.
So what's the point of all of this? The point is, everybody goes through anxiety at one point or another. Everybody stalls in doing the important things that may be scary or terrifying at the time. The bigger picture is that anxiety, fear, and worry can be beaten. It can and WILL win IF you let it, but if you actively seek new solutions to not only transform your mindset, but also boost your confidence, then you will win.
The funny thing is, I used this specific rule to write this blog post. I've been putting off putting out content other than what's on the Strive To Do Better Facebook page, Instagram page, as well as the various tweets on twitter. Why? Why was I waiting? What was I afraid of? The content not being post-worthy enough? Do it anyway.
I started reading the 5 Second Rule on Sunday(March 25th). Let me tell you, it was extremely hard to put down. In fact, it was SO HARD to put down that I ended up finishing it in the SAME week! I finished it 4 days later on Wednesday(the 28th) The way Mel Robbins told the story of how she came up with the rule, how she used the rule to take back the control in her life(which she felt was never going to be the same) and the stories she shares through individual's social media posts, messages, and comments from all around the world who started using this rule for themselves was truly inspiring and awesome to see.
It goes to show you that one small rule can lead to massive change in someone's life. This post is for the people who, like me, tend to put things off because we don't feel ready. We put things off because we're trapped inside our own minds. This post is for anyone looking for any potential solution to help them gain more clarity and feel more in control of their own lives.
It's time to stop hesitating. It's time to stop waiting. It's time to start taking action so YOU can realize your true potential. It's time for you to realize that the only right time to act is and ALWAYS will be now.
It's never too late to take control. It's never too late to become who you're ready to become. The time is now.
So strive every day.
